Emily grew up in a broken home after her parents' divorce - or, more accurately, a series of homes that her mother moved her to with each new diplomatic assignment. She struggled to replace the relationship she had with her father and craved the attention her mother failed to give her; making friends wasn't easy being constantly moved around...forcing her to get attention by acting out and rebelling, resulting in a series of bad decisions that left her struggling to repair a series of emotional wounds that haunt her to this day.

Currently working as an agent with the FBI's Behavioural Analysis Unit, Emily has seemingly returned from the dead after being stabbed through the abdomen by Ian Doyle - a man whom, while working undercover to get evidence to brind down his IRA weapons dealing ring, she fell in love with - after he escaped from a North Korean prison.

Since then, she's been struggling to once again fit in with her colleagues - who are the closest thing she's ever had to a real family - and their pain over burying their friend, only to find that they'd all been decieved. She's working on repairing the trust that was broken between her best friend and partner, Derek Morgan. At the same time, she's forced to deal with her own death and the issues that went along with it, such as the nightmares and repairing relationships.
